New ShipStation Update: Smarter Handling for Backorders 2/3/26

Sending Orders with Backordered Items to ShipStation

With our latest ShipStation update, you can send the same order to ShipStation more than once. This allows you to easily manage backordered items and partial shipments without creating duplicate orders or manual workarounds.

By marking items as backordered, only products that are ready to ship will be sent to ShipStation. Once backordered items are fulfilled, you can resend the order with only those remaining products.


How to Send an Order with Backordered Items

Step 1: Locate the Order

  1. Navigate to Order Manager, either from within your store or using the top navigation.

  2. Use the search fields to find the order you want to partially send to ShipStation.

Step 2: Mark Items as Backordered

  1. Hover over the order and click Show Items.

  2. Select the items that are backordered.

  3. Click Bulk ActionsUpdate Status → set the status to Backordered.

Step 3: Send Available Items to ShipStation

  1. Click Orders. Only the selected order will be visible.

  2. Select the order.

  3. Click Bulk ActionsSend to ShipStation.

You will see the following warning from Chipply:

Warning
Your selection contains orders with items marked as Backordered. Items with this status will not be sent to ShipStation, and product weights will not be included in totals. If you would like to include these items, please change the status to In Stock. Do you wish to continue?

Click Accept to continue. Only the in-stock items will be sent to ShipStation.


How to Send Backordered Items Once They Are Fulfilled

When the backordered items are received and ready to ship, follow these steps to send them to ShipStation.

Step 1: Locate the Order

  1. Navigate to the order in Order Manager.

Step 2: Update Backordered Items

  1. Hover over the order and click Show Items.

  2. Select the items that were previously marked as backordered.

  3. Click Bulk ActionsUpdate Status → change the status to New, Received/Pulled, or Shipped/Picked Up.

Step 3: Resend the Order to ShipStation

  1. Click Back to Orders. Only the selected order will be visible.

  2. Select the order.

  3. Click Bulk ActionsSend to ShipStation.

You will be prompted with the following message:

Some items in your order(s) have already been sent to ShipStation. Do you want to update the order(s) with these items?

Step 4: Choose the Correct Option

Select No, send new items only.
This ensures only the previously backordered items are sent to ShipStation.

Click Accept to complete the process.
