Using Production File Barcodes

The Production File popup includes a barcode generated from the production file name. This lets your team scan the file name directly from the screen into a production machine, instead of typing it by hand. 

 Where to Find It

The Production File popup can be opened from two places:

  • Artwork edit: open a store, click into an artwork, then click the production file

  • Production Manager: open the production files for a store, job, or process (view only)

The barcode appears below the Description field, with the file name printed underneath it.

What the Barcode Contains

  • The barcode reads the file name exactly as it was entered, including spaces, lower-case letters, and punctuation. For example, a file named CCK004140 EMB A.dst scans as CCK004140 EMB A.
  • The file extension is not included. If the file name has more than one dot, only the last extension is removed. For example, CCK.004 EMB.dst scans as CCK.004 EMB.
  • Production file barcodes use the Code 128 format, the same format used on item and order labels. No special scanner settings are needed.

Copying the Barcode

A Barcode button sits in the popup header between the QR Code and Close buttons. Clicking it copies an image of the barcode, with the file name printed under it, to your clipboard. You will see the message "Copied production file barcode to clipboard." You can then paste the image into an email, document, or image editor, and it can be scanned from there.

If the copy does not work (for example, if your browser is blocking clipboard access), a red error message will appear instead. Check your browser's clipboard permissions and try again.

When the Barcode Is Unavailable

In a few cases, the popup will show a message in place of the barcode:

  • Barcode unavailable: file name contains a special character. Curly apostrophes (’), accented letters (such as é), and emojis cannot be included in a barcode. Rename the file using standard characters to generate a barcode.
  • Save to generate barcode. If you replace a production file on the artwork edit page, save your changes first. Once saved, reopen the popup to see the barcode for the new file name.
  • Barcode available once the file is uploaded. The barcode will appear after the production file finishes uploading.
  • Too long to scan on screen. Very long file names (roughly 40 or more characters) may be too wide to scan from your screen. Use the Barcode button to copy the barcode image instead.

Please Note: The Barcode button is disabled when the barcode is unavailable because of a special character or unsaved changes.
